Dr Heidi Hilton 2015 Fight on the Beaches funded Researcher (and Northern Beaches born and bred!)
What is your area of research? Breast cancer, specifically understanding the relationship between hormones (estrogen and progesterone) and their roles in healthy breast development, and how their actions might go awry and increase breast cancer risk.
What does the fundraising Fight on the Beaches mean to you?
I now have the funds to carry out 1-2 years of research studying how hormones may drive breast cancer risk which we hope will provide critical information to bring us closer to preventing breast cancer, or at the very least, diagnosing it at its earliest point.
What will cancer treatment look like in 20 years?
I believe treatment will continue to be increasingly personalised. For example, depending on the exact molecular characteristics of a patient's tumour, they may be prescribed a particular 'cocktail' or medication just for them. With a shift towards personalised treatment I think chemo will be prescribed less, or at the very least will be more tolerable.
If attending the Ball, who would you love to invite?
I will definitely be at the Ball! I would love to invite Professor Ian Fraser. Having been instrumental in the vaccine for cervical cancer, his achievements are what every cancer researcher hopes to emulate.
Dr Heidi Hilton will attend both the VIP Drinks reception with Sponsors, and be available at the Ball to discuss her exciting research funded by Fight on the Beaches.
