It is more accurate to say that my life has been tortured by cancer!
Prior to December, 2012 we were a loving, happy, regular family of 4. After that, our then 2 year old daughter Neve, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. Our days consisted of tests, tears, operations, tranfusions and chemotherapy followed by more tears, infections and excruciating periods of sickness.
Neve’s diagnosis was the start of a nightmare and propelled us into a world of despair. We watched her tiny little body wither away for 2 years during which time she required a bone marrow donation from our 9 year old son, Eli. The process was so frightening for all, but we eventually got Neve home in July 2014, and we thought we had won. We were devastatingly wrong.
Neve passed away at Bear Cottage on the 21st October, 2014, just 2 weeks after her cancer returned.
How? Why? We continue with the experts to ask! It was the best treatment available, but it wasn’t good enough!
We now live a nightmare every day. I cannot imagine a more intense pain. The tone of our living has altered and we are all changed singularly and together. Neve deserved to be here, she deserved a grand life after all that she endured! And most of all we miss her excruciatingly every day.
Why is cancer research important to you?
In addition to the pain that I feel every day in dealing with life without Neve, I shudder that other families too are suffering like ours. Cancer knows no boundaries and as things stand today, we don’t have the answers.
Neve’s death was senseless and her life was too short due to cancer and current inadequate cancer treatments. I want answers to prevent ongoing tragedies like hers that can only be found with ongoing research.
Why did you choose to assist Fight on the Beaches?
I used to say to Neve when she was going through a tough time with chemotherapy that together we were going to kick Leukaemia’s butt. I also promised her that she would run, skip, jump and scoot with all the other kids.
FOTB is a courageous charity that is simply aimed at kicking cancers butt, and in joining this dynamic group of women to fight cancer it has helped me to have a positive outlet for my sadness and stand for something meaningful. Something positive, something that is aimed at preserving other family’s and preventing further senseless deaths. Neve is my determination.
If you could sit with any 4 people at the Ball, who would they be?
1. My Husband, Neve’s Dad, Matt Brady. He and I have been through so much together and have recently had our life completely adversely altered. Every day is hard but we remain united for our boys and for us. The FOTB Ball is positive for the both of us.
2. Tony Abbott. He wrote and signed a beautiful note to us when Neve passed. I would love for him to really know her story. I believe it is an influential story, consisting of the good, the bad and ugly
3. My Mum, Lauris Evans. She was our pillar of strength throughout Neve’s treatment. We couldn’t have seemingly been able to manage those long months without her and the FOTB Ball would have too been a positive step for her after so much grief.
4. Elsa, from the movie Frozen. If Neve is looking down on me this night, she would be so proud and smiling like only she could!!!!
Who is your greatest supporter?
My husband. Hard times, as we have experienced them, can make or break your relationship, however, Matt has been able to look at things from my perspective and acknowledge my feelings throughout. Matt fortunately continued to run a successful business whilst Neve was sick. I ceased my Nursing career without question to be with Neve 24/7.
Matt now supports me in whatever my ventures may be from here and he encourages me to try and find happiness each day. It’s not easy, but he is the greatest Dad to our 2 boys and best friend I could have.
